Stephen "Ness" Timmons Day !!
A Coach Like No Other.
CBU to Celebrate Stephen "Ness" Timmons Day
This Saturday's game against l'Universite de Moncton at Cape Breton University will be more than just any regular AUS women's soccer game. Following the game, friends, family and former players will gather to recognize and celebrate the amazing contributions of Coach Stephen "Ness" Timmons.
The New Waterford native is the first and only head coach the CAPERS women's soccer team have had in AUS action and he recently completed his twentieth year of service.
"Ness is considered one of the best coaches in the sport of Women's Soccer that the CIS has ever had," says John Ryan, Director of Athletics at CBU. "We are thrilled that he has been leading our Women's Soccer Program for the past 20 seasons. His success is second to none, but it is what he has done developing our student-athletes into outstanding well rounded young ladies when they graduate from his program that brings me the most pride. Ness's leadership style is an envy to us all and the list of high achieving alumnus of his program is endless."
Ness has led the CAPERS to unmatched success in Atlantic University Conference play. In the last 13 seasons, the CAPERS have a conference best 85 percent win-loss record. The CAPERS have won eight AUS titles (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015) and earned nine trips to the CIS National Championships. In 2007, Cape Breton University won its first and only National Championship while hosting the event. The CAPERS have been nationally ranked in the CIS for 10 straight years.
Not one to speak about his personal accolades, Ness Timmons has been recognized by his peers on several occasions for his contributions to his team's successes. He has been awarded the AUS Coach of the Year Award on 6 occasions (2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2012, 2013). Timmons also won the CIS National Coach of the year twice (2000, 2012).
"Ness adds a twist on coaching that I can't compare to the style of any other coach I've had, says Chelsea Currie. "Rather than just selecting quality athletes and creating a group of talented individuals, he has built a team within which every player feels that they have a purpose. With such a larger number of our team being from away, it's important to Ness that they feel as though they have a family here in Cape Breton; and because of this, we're a very successful team."
Chelsea goes on to add, "Ness has taught us that the term "success" isn't directly reflected by the scoreboard. Gaining points is important to us, yes, but he has us decide and post our own personal goals so that we work hard to become the player and the person that we want to be."
Timmons is still going strong and has his team off to a perfect 6-0-0 start this season. The CAPERS are currently in first place in the AUS and ranked 8th in the country. The CAPERS will look to continue the perfect run on Saturday at 1pm when they host the Aigles des Bleus.
