CAPERS 2017-18 Athletic Awards
Cape Breton University celebrated the 2017-18 year in Athletics at the 44th Annual Awards Banquet
Sydney, N.S. – Cape Breton University's Department of Athletics is proud to announce this year's Major and Team Award winners at the 44th Annual Athletic Awards Banquet as selected by the coaches and athletic department.
This year's Male Athlete of the Year is awarded to 2nd-year soccer CAPER Cory Bent. The Preston, UK native provided the CAPERS with incredible pace and offense and led them to an undefeated 11-0-1 regular season record, a first-place finish in the AUS standings.
Along with being awarded the Outstanding Contribution to the Team men's soccer award, he was named an AUS first team all-star and U Sports 2nd-Team All-Canadian. Bent also was named to the National Tournament All-Star team and National Tournament MVP. "Bent scored 8 goals on the year.
For the first time in school history, CBU awarded Co-Female Athletes of the Year. A former AUS Rookie of the Year, Ciera Disipio (Ottawa, ON) was named an AUS 1st-Team All-Star and U Sports 1st-Team All-Canadian. She was also named the AUS MVP and led the league in points with 11 goals and 6 assists. She helped lead the CAPERS to the 2017 AUS Championship and a U Sports National Silver medal.
This year's Second Female Athlete of the Year has been a highly decorated athlete during her career at CBU. Alison Keough (Marion Bridge, NS) is a leading player on the court; she has been a starter each year she has played for the CAPERS. Called upon to score, defend and lead, she has always answered every challenge. A four-time AUS 1st team all-star, one-time AUS 2nd team all-star, former AUS Rookie of the Year, one-time U Sports 2nd team all-Canadian, two-time U Sports 1st team all-Canadian, former U Sports rookie. She became CBU's all-time leader in Points and Rebounds and also set the AUS All-time record for career rebounds this season. She also earned her first AUS scoring title in 2017-18 averaging 19.2 ppg.
The President's Award was introduced to recognize the top academic performance among our student-athletes. Criteria for the award were developed with thanks to our academic advisor, Allen Britten. This year's recipient is being recognized for their effort during the 2017-18 academic years where she accumulated an overall average of 94% while working towards her BBA degree. Recognized as an AUS All-Star, from Howie Centre, NS. The President's Award was awarded to Becky Hanna.
The Kathy Reid Memorial Award is to given to the student-athlete who was able to overcome physical challenges and a tough season to compete at a high level. This year's recipient from Burlington, ON, Kyle Hankins.
The Cape Breton Credit Unions Most Outstanding Performance of the year award went to Bury, UK native, Ben Jackson. In the National Championship Final, the CAPERS goalkeeper made several dazzling saves to get the CAPERS to a shootout and then made a spectacular final save to secure the title for the CAPERS.
