Sydney, N.S. – Cape Breton University and CAPERS women's basketball head coach Fabian McKenzie is pleased to announce the commitment of Maia Watling to Cape Breton University for the upcoming season.
The 1st-year forward from Palmerston North, NZ is a former member of the U17 and U16 New Zealand National team. She recently finished 2nd at the New Zealand Women's National tournament with her Taranaki Thunder club team. Watling was also named MVP of her Palmerston North High School team in 2016 and 2017. The Kiwi chose Cape Breton because of the team environment and family culture that the CAPERS have built as well as their work ethic and drive to be competitive and improve. Watling explained, "I think CBU has a top women's basketball program and a top head coach."
"I am very happy to add Maia to our team next year. During the recruiting process I learned that she is a young lady that wants to work hard and get better but I also learned that she has the character we want to see in all of our players," commented McKenzie. "She will bring much-needed size to our roster and help with our scoring and defense at both ends of the floor. Maia will be the first player to suit for our team from New Zealand. Maia will enter the Arts program at CBU." McKenzie said.
When the 6'2 forward was asked how she sees herself helping the CAPERS in his first season, she said "I feel like my size and style of play will be a good asset to the team. I enjoy playing in a structured team environment and I think that fits in well with the CAPERS culture."
