Athletic Therapy
The Athletic Therapist offers services to the Cape Breton University Capers Varsity athletes.
Athletic Therapy is an area of healthcare dealing with prevention, emergency care, and rehabilitation of injuries in physically active populations. This could involve managing a concussion in a youth hockey player, using therapeutic modalities to reduce the swelling in a runner’s sprained ankle, an evaluation of the posture of an industrial athlete, or training a basketball player to improve their speed and vertical jump. Further information, including the Scope of Practice of an Athletic Therapist, can be found at:
Canadian Athletic Therapists Association
Atlantic Provinces Athletic Therapy Association.
Facilities
The Athletic Therapy Clinic is located just off the Sullivan Fieldhouse main court. The Athletic Therapist’s office is located in the Canada Games Centre opposite the Max Bell Health Centre entrance.
Healthcare Team
The Athletic Therapist is part of a team of healthcare professionals which provide care to the CBU Varsity athletes. Team members include:
Dr. Reggie Sebastian, General Practitioner, Max Bell Health Centre
Dr. Don Brien, Orthopedic Surgeon, Cape Breton Regional Hospital
Student Therapists
Opportunities are available for current CBU students who wish to be a Student Therapist with one of our varsity teams. Student Therapists are an important part of the team, providing on-field care at home and on the road. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience and skills for students interested in health care professions, or someone who wants to be involved more directly with Capers Athletics.
