UPEI, Western to meet for Fall Classic crown
The final is set at the 2015 Capers Fall Classic invitation men's basketball tourney and the Western Mustangs will meet the UPEI Panthers in Saturday's championship.
Western advanced with an 83-72 win over the StFX X-Men while UPEI overpowered the Nipissing Lakers 96-74.
In the days other action, The Regina Cougars defeated the Acadia Axemen 107-94 in overtime while the Calgary Dinos knocked off the ost Cape Breton Capers 68-63.
Saturday's schedule will see Acadia and CBU tip off at 12 noon, the Dinos and Cougars play at 2 p.m., StFX faces Nipissing for third at 6 p.m. and the Mustangs and Panthers go for the title at 8 p.m.
At 4 p.m. the Capers women's squad will take on Laurentian in Game 2 of a three-game weekend series.
CBU defeated Laurentian 76-57 in Game 1 Friday at Memorial High School in Sydney Mines.
Calgary 68, CBU 63
Thomas Cooper had 24 points and nine rebounds to pace the Dinos to their win over the Capers.
David Kapinga and Lars Schlueter had 13 points apiece for the winners.
Meshack Lufile led the Capers with 22 points and seven boards while Kyle Hankins had 11 points and seven rebounds in a losing cause.
Regina 107, Acadia 94
Jonathan Tull poured in 33 points, including 19 from the charity stripe, as Regina downed Acadia 107-94 in overtime.
Brandon Tull added 19 points for the Cougar while Alex Igual and Will Tallman finished with 18 and 14 points respectively.
Wrik Nissen with 33 points and 14 rebounds and Nick DePalma with 17 points were tops for the Axemen.
UPEI 96, Nipissing 74
Tyler Scott had 21 points and Brad States 20 points and 11 boards as the panthers cruised into the final with a 96-74 win over the Lakers.
Dut Dut had 14 points off the bench for the winners.
Jordon Campbell had 17 points to lead the Lakers while Marcus Lewis and Jody Puddister had 16 point each.
Western 83, StFX 72
Greg Morrow had 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists to lift the Mustangs to an 83-72 win over the X-Men in the day's final contest.
Peter Scholtes filled the score sheet for the winners as well, finishing with 22 points, seven assists and six boards.
Alex Coote added 18 points for the Mustangs.
Kevin Bercy with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Tristen Ross with 15 points were top performers for the X-Men.
