Sydney, NS – The CBU Men's Basketball Program start their 2017 AUS regular season schedule November 3rd when they travel to Fredericton to play the UNB Varsity Reds on November 3rd. The CAPERS are welcoming 12 new players and have used the preseason to focus on building the habits both on and off the floor to compete at the AUS level.
Head Coach David Petroziello returns for his 2nd season behind the CAPERS bench. Coach P says, "Our process goals are always the same, to get better each day at playing CAPER basketball." Coach also emphasized that the program's outcome goals are equally as clear. "The stated goal of the program is to compete at a national level and to fight for and win AUS Championships." This season's goals are to compete for a win every game and be in the playoffs in March.
With the CAPERS bringing in 12 new faces, the program will need major contributions from the new players. One of these new players to watch for is Martin Campbell (Upper Marlboro, MD), a 6'4 forward/guard who brings experience and savvy playmaking skills. Another new player to look out for is Paul Watson (Mississauga, ON) who brings length, athleticism and playmaking ability as a 6'6 wing forward. Sure to be a fan favorite is 6'2 shooter Indiana Rotondo (Vaughan, ON) who can make plays for himself and others and is a strong defender. There is also a new big man, 6'10 Grant Dickinson (Alexandria, VA) who can stretch the floor on offense and provide a presence on the glass. With so many new players, this season promises to an exciting one for the fans. Coach Petroziello says "Our team is built for speed and we want the game to be played fast in both directions. "
A key returning player is Kyle Hankins who is a 5th-year player and an important locker room presence and will be a key contributor on the court. Coach P said, "Kyle came in ready to perform and we are looking for a big season from him in every aspect of the game."
Last season, Petroziello's first in the AUS provided an incredible amount of teachable moments and lessons that the program is hoping to carry over into the 2017-18 season. The parity in the AUS means that the CAPERS will look to get right back into the playoffs after a one-year absence.
The CAPERS home opener is November 10th, when they host the Saint Mary's Huskies. Tip-off is 8 pm.
