Capers shoot into playoffs
October 28, 2012
With their backs against the wall, the Cape Breton University Capers men’s soccer team answered the call in convincing fashion defeating the Acadia Axemen 3-0 Sunday in Sydney to earn a spot in the 2012 Subway AUS Men’s Soccer Championship.
Needing at least a win and a draw in their last two regular season games, the Capers picked up a pair of victories to finish the season with a 6-3-4 record, good for third overall in the AUS.
Sunday, the Capers and Axemen battled the elements and each other for more than two-thirds of a game that had a playoff atmosphere from the first whistle before the home side broke the game wide open down the stretch.
Bruno Mota capitalized on a free kick to give the Capers a 1-0 lead at the 68-minute mark and veteran striker Shayne Hollis made it 2-0 for the hosts just five minutes later. Justin MacLellan rounded out the scoring in the 89th minute.
CBU will not face the host University of Price Edward Island Panthers in the conference quarter-finals this Friday in Charlottetown.
