Sydney, NS – The Cape Breton University Men's Soccer team beat the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 1-0 on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon at CBU Field in Sydney. With the victory, the CAPERS (9-2-1) locked down second place in the regular season final AUS standings. By virtue of that standing, they have assured themselves a spot in the semifinals next Friday night. The X-Men (7-2-3) loss means that they will have to play a quarterfinal matchup next Thursday.
The CAPERS received a first-half strike from Corey Bent (Preston, UK) with the assist going to Peter Schaale (Bernkastel-Kues, GER). The CAPERS defended well the rest away and limited X's chances to equalize. Jamie Wilson (Dunbar, SCO) earned the clean sheet as the CAPERS outshot he X-Men 4 to 1 in the defensive affair. Marko Djukic earned the Subway Player of the Game for a strong defensive effort. Thomas Pieroway (Conception Bay, NL) took the loss for the road X-men.
The CAPERS will travel to Fredericton next week as the UNB Varsity Reds host the 2016 Subway AUS Men's Soccer Championships November 3rd to 6th. The quarterfinals start on Thursday night at 5pm and 7.30pm. The semifinals go Friday night at 5pm and 7.30pm with the final being held Sunday afternoon at 2pm. All games can be seen on BellTv1.
