(FREDERICTON, NB) In a scrappy affair that featured seven yellow cards, the UNB Varsity Reds and Cape Breton University CAPERS played to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon, at UNB's BMO Centre.
The CAPERS were on the receiving end of four of the seven yellows, including one in the final minute of play. Charlie Waters(Lancashire, UK) opened the scoring in the 17th minute, burying a crossing pass in the far corner of the VReds net, giving the Capers a 1-0 lead.
"I saw it coming from the other side, came in from the wing, and obviously gambled that it would go off the back post, which usually results in goals," said Waters.
In the 41st minute, off a corner kick, Robbie Park(Glasgow, SCO) tapped the ball into the CAPERS goal, in a goal-mouth scramble, to tie it 1-1.
"It was either on the line or getting close to the line and Robbie tapped it in," said Walker, of the UNB goal. "They're a tough team, always top three in our league. We went down early, but the boys rallied. We do well at finding that grit, that determination, to find that goal to get even.".
As for the scrappy nature of the game, the CAPERS' Waters feels the mid-September heat might've had something to do with it. "It was a tough game, they played quite direct," he said. "But the heat, that was something we had to deal with."
The Capers, now 1-0-1, move on to Moncton for a game Sunday.
