MSOC: CBRM Proclaim Dec. 12th CBU Men's Soccer Day!
CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke proclaimed December 12 CAPERS Men's Soccer Day to honor the U Sports National Champion Cape Breton University Men's Soccer team.
(Sydney, NS) - CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke proclaimed December 12 CAPERS Men's Soccer Day to honor the U Sports National Champion Cape Breton University Men's Soccer team.
Assistant Coach Scott Clarke was on hand to accept the proclamation. "It was a great evening having our CBU Men's Soccer team being recognized by the CBRM. Today was proclaimed CBU Men's Soccer day. Over the last few years, we have made sure our players knew what Cape Breton was about. We strive to have them recognize that family, hard work, pride, and community are core components of life. The community support we received during this championship run was incredible. Our Players have realized what it means to be Cape Bretoners, they appreciate the support and have won a Championship for all of Cape Breton." said Clarke on behalf of Head Coach Deano Morley, Keeper Coach Vernon O'Quinn, the players and CBU's Department of Athletics.
Cape Breton Men's Soccer Team Season Recap
- The CAPERS finished the 2017 regular season with an 11-0-1 record good enough for 1st place in the AUS. They then went on to win both their playoff games at home here in Cape Breton in front of large crowds and earn their 5th AUS title in the last 11 years.
- Ben Jackson, Daniel Pritchard & Stuart Heath were named AUS 2nd-team all-stars and Peter Schaale, Cory Bent, Marcus Campanile & Charlie Waters were named AUS 1st-team all-stars. Charlie Waters was also named AUS Rookie of the Year and Deano Morley was named AUS Coach of the Year.
- The team then went on to the U Sports National Championships in Kamloops, BC and defeated Montreal 3-2 in a double over-time shoot-out in the final to earn their 1st National Title. Charlie Waters was named 2nd-Team All-Canadian & to the National All-Rookie team. Cory Bent was named 2nd-team All-Canadian & Finals tournament MVP. Deano Morley was also named the National Coach of the Year.
