CAPERS WOMEN REMAIN IN 1ST WITH WIN
Capers extend winning streak to 8 games, top UPEI Panthers 72-59
Sydney, NS - The game started off as a tough defensive game by both sides, but as the game went on it was the first place Cape Breton University Capers (9-1) taking the victory over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (4-6) with a final score of 72-59 at the Sullivan Field House.
It was tough for both teams to get on the score sheet in the first 20 minutes, with the home team taking a small 11-6 lead into the second quarter. Both teams struggled with turnovers and at the half the Panthers gave up 12 turnovers while the Capers turned it over 11 times.
Midway through the second frame, Panthers forward Carolina Del Santo (Barcelona, Spain) went down to injury and did not return. The Capers took advantage, and managed to extend their lead to as high as 17 before the half, capped off by a buzzer beater by Alison Keough (Marion Bridge, NS) to end the half.
A huge basket including a foul by Valentina Primossi (Trieste, ITA) put the Capers up 56-30 midway through the third, and later a three pointer by Natasha Roach (Roxboro, QC) brought the fans at the Field House to their feet, extending the Caper's lead up to 20.
A late push by the Panther's in the fourth brought them to within 12 at the end of the game, but it was too little too late.
Leading the Panthers was Kiera Rigby (Charlottetown, PE) who had a game high 18 points. For the Capers it was Primossi and Colleen Keane (Scarborough, ON) who both had 13 points. Keane also added 11 rebounds.
