Antigonish, NS – The Cape Breton Capers defeated the host StFX X-Women 77-62 to win the consolation final Saturday afternoon at the inaugural X-Women basketball invitational.
Hannah Brown (North Sydney, NS) led all scorers in the game with 22 points for Cape Breton. She also had nine rebounds in the game and five steals.
In a close scoring first quarter, the Capers got out to a 20-15 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play.
They widened the lead to 43-28 at halftime after outscoring the X-Women 23-13 in the second quarter. Brown scored 10 of her points in the quarter and Toni Bianchini (Groves Point, NS) hit a pair of three-pointers to add to the Capers lead.
The X-Women regrouped at half and came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 21 points in a well-rounded offensive attack, to the Capers 23. CBU held onto a 66-49 lead after the third.
The fourth quarter saw both teams struggle at times to score baskets as the X-Women tried to get back into the game and the Capers tried to hold onto their lead. StFX pulled to within five points after Brianna Gottschall hit a three-point shot with two minutes to play, but that was the closest they would get as the visitors hung on for the win.
For the Capers, Bianchini finished with 18 points while Madison Munro (Truro, NS) netted 15 and had six rebounds. Mackenzee Ryan (Glace Bay, NS) scored 10.
Both teams will be back in action next weekend, October 19-21 as Cape Breton hosts the Debbie Ruiz memorial tournament at the Sullivan Field House. The University of Nipissing and the Université de Quebec á Montreal with join the host Capers and the X-Women.
Friday night, October 19ththe X-Women will tip-off at 6:00 pm with Nipissing, followed by the Capers and UQAM at 8:00 pm.
