Capers set to host AUS women's soccer championship
October 11, 2012
Cape Breton University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce they will host the Subway 2012 AUS Women’s Soccer Championship, November 2-4 at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex.
“We are pleased to be able to host this event at CBU and to showcase the best university soccer teams in Atlantic Canada,” said John Ryan, CBU’s Director of Athletics. “With our past history of success hosting AUS championship events, Cape Bretoners have been exposed to some of the highest calibre of athletic competition in the country. We hope fans join us in supporting the hometown CAPERS and take advantage of this opportunity to once again see some of best young student-athletes”
One of the top programs in the AUS, with six conference titles in the past 10 seasons (2003, 2005-2008, 2010) and a CIS championship in 2007, the Capers women’s soccer team continues to build towards the AUS championship.
“This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our team and compete for a championship in front of our hometown fans,” said Ness Timmons, Head Coach of the CAPERS women’s soccer team. “We are proud we have been able to build this team into a nationally-recognized program and we hope to have continued success at home in November.
“We battled through some early injuries and managed to enjoy a successful start to the season, but it all comes down to this one weekend,” added Timmons, whose team is currently ranked No. 7 in the CIS Top 10 poll.
Leading the CAPERS offence will be strikers Karolyne Blain, the 2011 AUS Rookie of the Year, second-year striker Shanice Maxwell who led the Nova Scotia women’s league in scoring this past summer and rookie Chelsea Currie, who has made an immediate impact on the CAPERS lineup.
CBU will also rely heavily on AUS All-Stars and team co-captain Robbyn McNeill and Allison Bell-Davies.
CBU President & Vice-Chancellor John Harker and his wife, Eunice have been selected as Honorary Chairs of the Championship. Both have been steadfast supporters on CAPERS Athletics since arriving in Cape Breton and are regularly seen on the sidelines at all varsity events.
