November 1, 2016
(Sydney, NS) - As the CAPERS Women's Soccer team host the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Championship Tournament this weekend, they'll also play host to a special guest speaker. Two time Olympian Desiree Scott will give the 2016 AUS luncheon address to kick off the weekend on Thursday, November 3.
"It's exciting for us to be able to bring an athlete of Olympic calibre to Cape Breton," says John Ryan, Director of CBU Athletics. "Scott is known for her fierce skill and raw talent. Nicknamed the Destroyer, yet an amazing champion of great sportsmanship, she's an all around leader in the sport, so we're thrilled to be able to connect her to Atlantic Canada's university athletes in this way."
Desiree Scott first represented Canada at the 2006 CONCACAF U-20 Championship where the team won silver to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. After appearing in three games at the global tournament, Scott made her debut with the senior national team in 2010, which included a gold medal at the CONCACAF Championship. In 2011, she competed at her first FIFA Women's World Cup and helped Canada win gold at the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara. The following year she was part of Canada's incredible bronze medal performance at London 2012. From 2011 to June 2015, Scott played in a career-high 62 consecutive Canada matches. After participating in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup on her home turf, she helped Canada win silver at the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifier in early 2016, earning the team a spot in Rio. She was also a member of the team that won the 2016 Algarve Cup. Scott earned her second Olympic medal at the 2016 games in Rio, Brazil by helping Canada to a 3rd place finish.
Scott will not only address the luncheon guests on Thursday, but will coach a session with Soccer Cape Breton and sign autographs.
