CAPERS Win St.FX Invitational
The Cape Breton University CAPERS women's soccer program started their season off on the right foot.
Antigonish, NS - The Cape Breton University CAPERS women's soccer program started their 2017 season by winning the 2017 St.Fx Invitational Tournament. The CAPERS won both of their game in Antigonish. They started the tournament by beating the defending AUS Champion X-Women 1-0 in penalty kicks. The victory exacted a small amount revenge as the X-Women defeated the CAPERS 1-0 in the same fashion in the AUS Semi-finals.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw through regulation. Veteran keeper Lysianne Trottier (Barrie, ON) was in nets for the CAPERS. The game was decided by penalty kicks and the visiting Capers took the decision. After missing their first penalty shot, the CAPERS then scored on their next three to take the victory.
The team followed up their Thursday victory with a dominant 6-0 win over the Mount Allison Mounties on Friday. The CAPERS got goals from five different players. Verterans Tamara Brown (Whitby, ON) , Keona Simmonds (Brampton, ON), Chantal Caron(Ottawa, ON) and Chelsea Foote (Halifax, NS) all scored singles. Rookie Rachel Leck (Pickering, ON) scored two goals off the bench for the CAPERS. Goalkeeper Rachel Yerxa (Mississauga, ON) earned the clean sheet. 5th-year Brown earned MVP honors for the tournament.
The CAPERS continue their training camp with some team building activities leading up to their home opener. The CAPERS open their season hosting the Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday, September 9th at 1.00pm. This season also marks the 10th anniversary of the 2007 National Championship.
