Capers beat SMU 4-2 in men's soccer
(HALIFAX, N.S.)—The visiting CBU Capers doubled up the SMU Huskies 4-2 on Friday evening from Huskies Stadium in Atlantic University Sport men's soccer action.
Cape Breton—ranked no. 2 by U SPORTS—showed why they are the defending 2018 silver medalists, scoring in the 4thminute from Charlie Waters.
Saint Mary's leveled the score on a penalty kick in the 15thminute from Cian Tousignant-Osiadhail (Timberlea, NS).
Waters (Blackpool, UK) would add his second in the 34thminute on a penalty-kick and CBU led 2-1 at the half.
SMU scored in the 58thminute off a rebound shot from Tyler Dorey (Cole Harbour, NS) as Calum Thompson (Dartmouth, NS) added an assist.
Saint Mary's almost took the lead in the 68thminute when James Spence's (Hammonds Plains, NS) left-footed curled shot found the fingertips of CBU keeper Ben Jackson (Bury, UK).
CBU took the lead with late goals from Cory Bent (Preston, UK) in the 73rdminute and Waters scoring his third of the match in the 79thminute, giving CBU a 4-2 victory.
Cape Breton outshot SMU 14-6, with each goalie forced to make four saves apiece.
Saint Mary's had one more corner kick than CBU, 6-5 and two more fouls, 13-11.
Jackson picked up the win for CBU, who improve to 4-0-1 in conference action while Jensen Brown (Enfield, NS) had the loss for SMU, who fall to 4-1-0 in AUS play.
Up next for both teams are 3:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon games, as CBU travels to 1-2-1 Acadia while SMU hosts 1-1-2 Dalhousie.
