ANTIGONISH, NS - The Cape Breton Capers are off to the Bell AUS Men's Soccer Championship game after a chippy 3-0 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleus on Friday afternoon at STFX Stadium.
The CAPERS will face the winner of the semifinal match between STFX and Dalhousie being played later Friday afternoon.
The top seeded CAPERS maintained possession through the early minutes, and found their reward in the 6th minute, with Jamie Nicholson knocking home a loose ball in front of the Moncton net.
CBU had a couple more chances in the first 20 minutes, with Amadou Bayo hitting one under the bar after a pass from Evan Cunningham after a corner kick to make it 2-0.
Moncton built up some momentum in the final 15 minutes and had a dangerous free kick from about 20 yards out with five minutes left, but the score remained 2-0 after 45 minutes.
Les Aigles Bleus came close to getting back into the game in the 60th minute but weren't able to convert following a defensive miscue by the CAPERS.
Moncton kept pressing but it was Cape Breton who found the net, with Nikolai Scheurenbrand tapping in a pass from Nicholson for the final goal of the game.
Frustrations boiled over a few times in the second half, and more cards came out for Moncton. They came close to breaking the deadlock in the final minutes, but the CBU defenders cleared the ball off the line and Harrington fell on it.
Jack Harrington earned the shutout win in the CAPERS net.
CBU forward Jamie Nicholson was named the Boston Pizza Player of the Game.
