The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (3-5-4=13pts, 7e position) have been eliminated from this week's Atlantic University Sport soccer championship in Cape Breton.
The men's team had to win Saturday's game against the first-place Cape Breton University Capers (9-0-3=30pts, 1st position). Lionel Feval scored on an additional-time penalty kick to earn a 1-1 draw in a hard-fought encounter between the two teams. Younes Bouida's players knew what was at stake. With a 1-0 win for the Dalhousie University Tigers over the UPEI Panthers on Saturday, the Tigers moved into the 6th and final qualifying spot with a 2-point lead over the blue and gold.
The Capers opened the scoring in the first half with a goal in the 19th minute by Owen Sheppard. Mattéo Blanc made 8 saves in goal for the blue and gold while Daniel Clarke made 4 for the Capers. Cape Breton had 5 corner kicks and Moncton 2.
This game was the last of the regular season for the Aigles Bleus at Stade Croix Bleue Medavie Stadium. The 6 teams that will take part in the AUS championship are Cape Breton, St. Francis Xavier, University of New Brunswick, Memorial, Saint Mary's and Dalhousie.
