CAPERS WIN DEBBIE RUIZ CHAMPIONSHIP
The CAPERS beat U of T 82-65.
Sydney, NS - The Cape Breton University CAPERS women's basketball beat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 82-65 on Sunday afternoon at the Sullivan Field House. The victory ensured that the host CAPERS would win the first Debbie Ruiz Memorial Basketball Tournament. With the win, the CAPERS, McGill University and the University of Toronto all finished the weekend with 2-1 records. By virtue of the best point differential between the three teams, the CAPERS were awarded the preseason tournament championship award.
The CAPERS were led in the final game of the weekend by Alison Keough (Marion Bridge, NS) who had 25 points and 11 rebounds and sparkplug Jalynn Skeir (Halifax, NS) with 15 points including. Keyira Parks led the Varsity Blues with 14 points in a losing cause.
Varsity Blues guard Diedre Edwards was named to the tournament all-star team. For the CAPERS, Alison Keough (Marion Bridge, NS) and Valentina Primossi (Trieste, IT) received the tournament all-star nod.
The CAPERS needed to win the final game of the weekend by 14 to ensure a tournament victory. Cape Breton broke open a tight game in the second half to secure the championship by winning by 17.
The CAPERS next play McMaster University in Toronto on Friday at 2pm.
