Capers advance to AUS championship
November 3, 2012
The Cape Breton University Capers showed why they’re the top seed in the AUS, dispatching the Saint Mary’s Huskies 3-0 in semifinal action at the 2012 Subway AUS Women’s Soccer Championship Saturday in Sydney.
Third-year midfielder Jessica Furtado put the home side on the board first, scoring just over three minutes into the first half as the CIS No. 5 ranked Capers came out firing.
Several other scoring chances misfired for both sides and they battled through a drizzly first half with the Capers taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Danielle MacDonald would give the Capers some breathing room early in the second half, firing a laser to the top corner of the goal at the 47-minute mark.
MacDonald, who would be named player of the game for the Capers, added her second of game in the 69th minute to round out the scoring and send the Capers to the final with a 3-0 win.
CBU, which remained undefeated on the year, will meet the winner of the Dalhousie and University of Prince Edward Island semifinal for the AUS championship at 2 p.m. Sunday.
