X-Women upset #1 seed
St.Fx win in PK Shootout to advance to finals
Sydney, NS – The Cape Breton University Capers and St. Francis Xavier X-women played 120 minutes of scoreless soccer and needed penalty kicks to settle the game on a cool Friday night at CBU Field. The St. Francis Xavier X-Women played a near perfect road game to earn a trip to the AUS finals.
The X-Women defended and cleared the ball most of the game and goalie Nicole Macdonald (Kanata, ON) made several spectacular saves to take the game into extra-time and through to penalty kicks. The X-women scored on all 5 of their shots and decided to put in goalie Erin Visser (Whitby, ON) to for the shootout. It turned out to be the right move as she saved one of the CAPERS shots.
The CAPERS outshot X 7 to 3 and controlled the play for most of the game. The CAPERS had 13 corner kicks but could not cash in on any of their chances. Keona Simmonds (Brampton, ON) led the CAPERS with 4 shots, while Chelsea Currie (Sydney, NS) fired 3 shots on goal. Kelsey Ellis (Ottawa, ON) had all the shots for St.Fx. The X-women will now await the winner of the second semi-final matchup between #2 seed Memorial and #3 seed Acadia. Acadia is hosting the CIS National championships next week.
