Cape Breton University’s Athletics Department officially launched the start of their 2016-2017 season with a press conference at Centre 200 on Tuesday, September 13.

CAPERS LAUNCH SEASON
(Sydney, NS) – Cape Breton University's Athletics Department officially launched the start of their 2016-2017 season with a press conference at Centre 200 on Tuesday, September 13.
Athletics Director John Ryan took the opportunity to introduce new staff members Shaun Ranni, Varsity Athletics and Recreation Coordinator; Jennifer Billard, Student Life and Community Engagement Coordinator; and David Petroziello, Head Coach of the Men's Varsity Basketball team
"We've always been a really strong organization," says Ryan. "With the addition of new staff members and fresh perspectives to our team, along with the expertize of those who have been with us at length, we are looking forward to having another outstanding year and rising to the challenge of being champions athletically and academically."
Cape Breton University will be hosting a number of high profile events this season. Long-time leader and well-respected Women's Soccer Coach Ness Timmons will be recognized for completing 20 years of service on October 1.
The Debbie Ruiz Memorial Basketball Tournament will be held at the Sullivan Fieldhouse October 14-16. Ruiz was a student leader and assistant coach with the CAPERS. She recently passed away from ovarian cancer. Proceeds from the tournament will start a student scholarship in her honour.
The annual Capers Fall Classic Basketball Tournament will be held at Centre 200 October 20 – 22 with teams coming from Atlantic Canada, Quebec and the United States. CBU will host the AUS Women's soccer Championships November 3 - 6 and on January 28, 2017, Karolyne Blaine will be recognized for her outstanding athletic and academic career with a day named in her honour. Blaine is the most decorated athlete in CBU history and is currently in medical school.
The CBU Department of Athletics is also asking local businesses to join the "Get Up It's Gameday" challenge by wearing orange every Friday in support of the CAPERS. Get involved by following @gocapersgo on twitter and instagram, following us on facebook and showing your orange pride.
