Capers fall from first place
January 22, 2012
Playing without Head Coach Thom Gillespie and MVP-candidate Jimmy Dorsey, the Cape Breton University Capers men’s basketball team dropped a pair of road games Friday and Saturday.
Saturday the Capers didn’t have an answer for StFX’s Terry Thomas who scored 21 points to lead the No. 4 ranked X-Men to a 90-71 win over the Capers in Antigonish.
Al Alilovic had 19 points and 11 boards for the Capers, who fell to 7-5 on the season. Kelson Devereaux and Meshack Lufile were the only other Capers to break double digits, finishing with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Second-year guard Julian Smith struggled from the field, finishing with just eight points, but chipped with eight assists and four steals for CBU.
Shane Coupland with 14 points and Will Donkoh and Marquis Clayton with 13 points apiece were other top scorers for the X-Men.
Friday in Halifax, CBU were on the short end of a 79-66 score, falling to the Saint Mary’s Huskies at The Tower.
Alilovic had 13 points to lead all CBU scorers in the game.
A.J. Geugjes had 10 points and 12 boards for the Capers while Smith and Devereaux both finished with 10 points.
Tory Fassett had 22 points and nine boards for the Huskies.
Brian Rouse had 17 points and Riley Halpin 15 points for the winners.
CBU will meet the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds in a pair of games this weekend at the Sullivan Fieldhouse. Game times are 8 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
