Capers take weekend opener over UNB
January 27, 2012
It was a strange type of night for the Cape Breton University Capers men’s basketball team, but when the final buzzer sounded, they had another victory, defeating the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 83-73 at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
After a sluggish start which saw the two clubs tied at 17-17 through one quarter, CBU took their game to a different level in the second quarter, outscoring their opponents 21-1 to take a 38-18 lead into halftime.
It was a different UNB squad in the second half however as the visitors managed to outscore the Capers 55-45, but it wasn’t enough and the home side escaped with the win.
Jimmy Dorsey continued to make his case as the best player in the AUS, pouring in a game high 27 points to go along with nine assists, four rebounds and three steals for the 8-5 Capers.
Julian Smith added 25 points for the winners while Meshack Lufile and Al Alilovic chipped in with eight apiece.
Alex DesRoches had 20 points and eight boards in a losing cause for the Varsity Reds.
Other top scorers for UNB included William McFee with 13 and Matthew Daley with 12.
The two sides will meet again Saturday with a 3 p.m. tip off set for the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
