Dorsey wins MVP
March 1, 2012
There have been a number of great players in the history of the Cape Breton University Capers men’s basketball program, but Jimmy Dorsey has accomplished something none other can claim.
The fourth-year guard from Baltimore, MD became the first Caper to ever be named as AUS Most Valuable Player when he was honoured at Subway AUS Men’s Basketball Championship Award Banquet Thursday in Halifax.
The 6’2”, 180lb. guard put together an incredible season for the rebuilding Capers, helping to lead the squad to an 11-9 regular season record, good for fourth in the AUS standings.
“Jimmy has played exceptionally well throughout this AUS season and he has been instrumental in keeping CBU highly competitive despite the challenges and obstacles this young team faced,” said Thom Gillespie, interim Head Coach at CBU. “Leading the league in scoring and recording the second highest assist total in AUS history speaks for itself, but it has been his willingness to rebound at the defensive end and his passion for winning that has revived the Capers program. Jimmy being named AUS Most Valuable Player is a well-earned honour. ”
Dorsey ranked among the top five in seven AUS statistical categories and was first in scoring at 22.8 points per game, assists at 8.8 per game and steals with 2.8 per game.
His 7.7 rebounds per game were fifth, as was his 84 per cent free throw percentage.
Across the country, few have managed to outdo Dorsey this season. His 159 assists, a CBU single season record, are the second most for a single season in AUS history and tops in the CIS. His 8.8 assists and 2.8 steals per game averages are also CIS bests while his 410 total points is second best. His 22.8 points per game and 50 total steals were both ranked fourth in the CIS.
An AUS First Team All-Star the past two seasons, Dorsey also led the conference in double-doubles and added the CBU single-game scoring record to his resume on February 12th when he hit for 49 points in a 111-106 victory over the Acadia Axemen.
Dorsey was also recognized with a spot on the AUS First All-Star Team while freshman A.J. Geugjes was named to the conference All Rookie Team.
