Keith, Evans commit to Capers
March 15, 2012
The 2011-2012 season has just come to a close, but the Cape Breton University Capers men’s basketball team is already looking to the future with the commitment of two key recruits for next year.
Shaq Keith, a 6’4” guard from Toronto ranked among the Top 15 high school players in the country and Ryan Evans, a 6’11” centre/power forward from Ottawa have both declared their intentions to suit up for the Capers next season.
In an interview with Crown Magazine following his decision, Keith explained his decision about why he chose Cape Breton over the list of mid-major programs recruiting him south of the border.
“Honestly when I was at home thinking about my decision, a lot of things were going through my mind. I had offers from many different schools down south like Washington State, Maine, Creighton, New Mexico State, St. Bonaventure, Murray St., Tennessee Tech, and much more, but my heart was really at home and I prayed to Jesus Christ and asked him to help direct me into the right school and CBU was that school.”
Keith told Crown that his decision to stay at home and attend Cape Breton was beyond staying to his roots and the beginning of something special.
“I want to be the start of something new in CIS Basketball and let the USA players want to come here instead of us having to go down there. If all those players stayed up here that went down there like Wiggins, Webster-Chan, Rathan-Mayes, Bennett and so forth, Canadian Basketball would be just as good as the U.S. and I want to be the start of that.”
The 6’11”, 225lb. Evans averaged 18 points, 13 rebounds, 9 blocks and 6 assists per game for Earl of March High School and choose CBU over Ryerson and York.
“My trip to CBU was great,” said Evans. “I saw two good games and got a good feel for the atmosphere of the crowd and also the university. (Athletic Director) John (Ryan) and (former player) Scott (Jaspers-Fayer) talked to me every day and they helped me show that they are determined to win and create a great team.”
Overall, it was a combination between athletics and academics which allowed Evans to make his final decision.
“I choose CBU because they have resources available to help me in class with taking notes and focusing on school,” said Evans. “The small class sizes will help me focus and not get lost during lectures and basketball wise it’s a up and coming team with a good basketball tradition that I want to be a part of.”
