Cape Breton University recognizes Academic All-Canadians

Top CBU student-athletes were honoured today at the annual Academic All-Canadian Luncheon.
A school-best 23 varsity athletes were recognized in the presence of peers and professors for their academic accomplishments according to standards set by the national university sport authority, Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).
To qualify as an academic all-Canadian, a student-athlete must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 80 per cent or better over the academic year, while competing in a varsity sport. All five of CBU's varsity teams were represented in the awards ceremony, showcasing the breadth of academic success exhibited by CAPERS' student-athletes. The men's soccer team led CBU's varsity pack with eight academic all-Canadians from the 2012-13 roster.
"We are very proud of our student athletes for their all around achievements," says Athletic Director John Ryan. "Being a student athlete is very demanding and to achieve excellence in both academics and athletics speaks well for their talents and determination."
Being honoured with the Academic All-Canadian awards for the 2012-2013 academic year are: Brennen Fule, BBA, and Nick Huggard, BBA of the men's basketball team, Jason Massie, MBA, Gregg Whitting, BBA, Ryan Lewars, BBA, Andrew Rigby BACS, Marcin Kowalski, BBA, Justin MacLellan, BSc, Sandro Rajkovic, BBA and Richard Risk, BBA of the men's soccer team, Justine MacNeil, BSc of the women's basketball team, Katelyn, Costa, BBA, Danika McNeil-Willmott, BSc, Cassie MacDonald, BSc, Chantelle Zawila, BA, Rylee Etherington, BSc and Janette Simmonds, BA of the women's volleyball team and Kaelyn Burke, BBA, Karolyne Blain, BSc, Kara MacKinnon, BBA, Heather Marsh, BScN, Tara Rogers, BEd and Allison Bell-Davies, BA of the women`s soccer team.
The CAPERS' men`s and women's soccer team contributed an impressive 14 Academic All-Canadian student athletes for the 2012-2013 academic year. The total of 23 Academic All-Canadians is a new school best for CBU which has seen the number consistently rise over the past decade.
"These fine young men and women exemplify the ideals paramount in our CAPERS athletic philosophy. We believe university sports allow student athletes to develop to their greatest potential as they experience the challenges and rewards of a quality academic and athletic program," adds Ryan.
