Capers Fall in Competitive Game vs. Tigers

Sydney, NS - The Cape Breton University Capers (0-13) were able to keep it close down the stretch, but eventually fell to the Dalhousie Tigers (9-4) with a final score of 85-67. The Atlantic University Sport men's basketball game is the first of two games to take place at the Sullivan's Field House this weekend.

It was the Tigers who were rolling early, opening the game on a 14-6 run. This fast start was capped with a three pointer by Sven Stammberger (Halifax, NS), which silenced the faithful Capers fans in the Field House. Near the end of the quarter Blake Gallatly (Maffra, AUS) hit a layup to make the score 21-13 going into the second.

The Tigers continued to stay hot in the second frame. Matt McVeigh (Tantallon, NS) came off the bench to score nine of his 12 points in the quarter. The Capers did manage to stay close to the Tigers, cutting the lead to single digits before Dalhousie ended the half on a 13-2 run.

In the third the Tigers appeared to start pulling the game out of reach, but a big second half from Jack MacAulay (Charlottetown, PEI) kept the Capers in it until late in the fourth. He was almost unstoppable from long range, nailing 4-5 shots from behind the three-point line. He finished with 18 points, all coming in the second half of the game.

In the final quarter, the Capers cut the tigers lead to 11 points, but that is as close as they could get. MacAulay was the Capers leading scorer while coming off the bench with 18 points. Kyle Hankins (Burlington, ON) and Seth Amoah (Montreal, QC) both had 12 points for Cape Breton.

Stammberger had a game-high 20 points, with four rebounds and a steal. Ritchie Kanza Mata (Toronto, ON) who is second in the AUS in assists, earned seven more, along with 17 points and two steals.

The Tigers and Capers will be right back on the court Saturday when both teams will meet again at the Field House for the second game of their back-to-back.

The game will start at 8 p. m.
