CBU Extend Unbeaten Streak

Sydney, NS - The first place and U SPORTS second-ranked Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers scored a 3-0 shutout victory over the visiting Dalhousie Tigers in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men's soccer action on Saturday night in New Waterford. 

The first quality scoring opportunity for either side came in the opening minute of the match when CBU midfielder Ze Cunha (Cascais, Portugal) caused a turnover, which led to a quality shot for Jacob Spizzirri (Woodbridge, ON), but Dal keeper Aiden Rushenas (Toronto, ON) made the save.

A few minutes later, the Tigers came up empty on a corner kick chance.

In the ninth minute, CBU opened the scoring on a marker from Subway player of the game Cian Lynch (Dublin, Ireland), who capitalized on a pass from Owen Sheppard (St. John's, NL).

The Tigers got back-to-back scoring chances from Mykeo Parker Christmas (Halifax, NS), but Caper keeper Daniel Clarke (Milton Keynes, England) made a pair of sensational stops.

Moments later, Parker Christmas split two Caper defenders but Clarke made a sharp toe save to keep it 1-0 for the home side.  

Late in the first half, the Capers doubled their edge off a corner-kick opportunity, with Lynch tallying his second of the match to make it 2-0 heading to the locker room.

Early in the second half, the Capers ramped up the pressure on the Tiger back line, including a nifty individual effort from Sheppard, who tested Rushenas with a shot from the top of the box. 

Max Piepgrass (Calgary, AB) almost extended the CBU lead when he rocketed a strike that headed for the top corner but Rushenas soared to deflect it out of bounds. 

Lynch - once again - almost notched his third marker of the match, but Rushenas showed his vertical leap and made another stellar save. 

Not long after that offensive push, the Capers upped their edge to 3-0 on a goal from Spizzirri, in the 70th minute, with the assist going to Lynch. 

As the CBU offense continued to pour it on in the second half, Spizzirri got another chance for his second goal of the match, his shot just missed going inside the right post. 

The Capers will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 27 - at 7:15 p.m. ADT - when they host the UNB Reds at Ness Timmons Field on the CBU campus.

The Tigers will return to the pitch for their regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 29 - at 3:15 p.m. - when they host the UPEI Panthers
