Keough's heroics lift Capers past X-Women
January 15, 2014
Alison Keough of Marion Bridge sunk both the game-tying and game-winning baskets for the Cape Breton Capers as they edged the St. Francis Xavier X-Women in overtime 66-65 in Atlantic University Sport action on Tuesday in Antigonish.
Keough put home the game-tying hoop in the final seconds to force overtime, tied 58-58. She also scored a buzzer beater to win the game in overtime. Keough finished the game with 12 points and nine boards.
Tanira McClurkin led the Capers scoring with 20 points. Colleen Keane followed with 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Keishia Lespoir netted 10.
The victory was the third straight for CBU, improving to 6-3 on the season for second place in the conference.
"It went into overtime and we gave up four, offensive rebounds on free throws which is horrible and we did a lot of bad things," said Capers head coach Fabian McKenzie. "But Colleen Keane was a monster on the glass and Keishia Lespoir was great defensively the whole game.
"It came down to the last second. We put it in Keishia's hand, she drove, found Alison under the rim, and she layed it up and the game was over."
The X-Women replied with a game-high 21 points from Vanessa Pickard. Kolbi Roper followed with 19 points and 10 boards.
The Capers won the game despite trailing 36-27 at halftime. They surged back with 19 third-quarter points.
