Hannah Brown to join Capers in 2014
November 13, 2013
For the second straight year, the Cape Breton University Capers women's basketball has landed the top local recruit with today's commitment of Hannah Brown.
The commitment of Brown, a 6'2" post player from North Sydney is in her senior year at Memorial High School and is widely considered to be among the top prospects in the Maritimes.
"Hannah was a highly sought recruit in this year's class and I am very excited she has chosen CBU and our basketball program," said Capers Head Coach Fabian McKenzie. "She brings a tremendous work ethic and will be an immediate physical presence in the paint. She has a wide range of skills and brings a lot of versatility to our lineup."
The 18-year-old Brown has been a member of the Basketball Nova Scotia provincial team program for a number of years and competed with Team Nova Scotia at the 2013 Jeux Canada Games last summer in Sherbrooke, PQ.
While she did consider other options, Brown felt the Capers program, which she had grown up watching, was by far the best fit for her.
"I just kept thinking back to all those times I sat behind the Capers bench and watched them play," said Brown. "I've watched the success and the great players who have gone through the program so it really was the best choice for me.
"And I'm getting a great coach who will set me up for success and make me the best player and person he can," she added.
An excellent student, Brown will enroll in the Bachelor of Science program at Cape Breton University.
"Hannah is a great student and is an all around great person," said McKenzie. "She has worked very hard to improve herself as a basketball player and I am looking forward to coaching her for the next five years."
Brown becomes the second top calibre Cape Breton player to joining the CBU family, coming on the heels of Marion Bridge's Alison Keough, who is currently in her freshman season with the Capers.
"Alison is a great player and I love playing on the same team as her," said Brown, who partnered with Keough to win the Nova Scotia Juvenile Championship last spring. "I definitely enjoy playing with her more than playing against her."
Having two highly sought after local players joining the Capers program is encouraging for McKenzie.
"Like Alison, I watched Hannah grow up in our gym as she started with our mini basketball camps many years ago," said McKenzie. "I feel it's important for us to help develop the young players of our community and to see these young ladies develop their talent to a level where they are able to compete in the AUS is very satisfying."
