Making the Most of Her Last Year as a CAPER

By the time she was in seventh grade, basketball lover Hannah Brown knew she would become a CBU athlete one day. As she sat in the stands watching the CAPERS dominate the court, Hannah promised herself that she would do whatever it took to experience that excitement firsthand.

Hannah says she was lucky to be mentored by highly skilled players and coaches throughout her youth, providing the support and encouragement that she says led to her success in creating a university basketball career.

Now, nearing the end of her career as a CBU athlete, Hannah says the experience has been everything she dreamed of and more.

"The greatest gift basketball has given me is the friendships and relationships I have developed during my time at CBU," says Hannah. "Without it, I would have never met the people who shaped me into the person and player I am today."

Hannah will be graduating in May 2019, with a Bachelor of Business Administration and says her journey at CBU has prepared her for a successful career in the field of Human Resources. "Being a student-athlete has helped me develop time management skills that will be incredibly beneficial in the field," says Hannah. "The athletic department and professors at CBU are extremely helpful and understand the balance required to be a student-athlete."

Hannah says the biggest lesson she learned during her five years at CBU has been perseverance. "It's not about the destination," she says. "It's about loving the path and process that gets you to where you want to be."

When it comes to what's next, Hannah says that's the million dollar question. One thing she knows for sure is that she'll miss being a student-athlete at CBU. "When I graduate from CBU, I know I will be taking home so much more than a degree," says Hannah. "I will leave with long-lasting friendships, life lessons and a great sense of pride knowing I've accomplished all of this at home, on Cape Breton Island."

Hannah will be taking to the court on January 26, the CBU Basketball Orange Out, where the stands will be filled with CAPERS fans. She says she can't wait to play in her home gym and feel the support radiating from the crowd. "When I see the stands filled with orange, I feel the support of every single fan behind our team," says Hannah. "It serves as a huge motivator for us and contributes to our success on the court."

Hannah would like to thank all of the CAPERS fans for the constant support of the athletic programs at CBU. "I think I can speak on behalf of all CBU athletes when I say that our successes wouldn't be possible without your love and support," says Hannah.

So come on out on Saturday, January 26, and cheer on Hannah and the rest of the CBU CAPERS as they take on the Dalhousie Tigers. Games are at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
