COACH OF THE YEAR: Fabian McKenzie
(Sydney, NS) - Fabian McKenzie has been selected by his peers as the 2018-19 AUS Women's Basketball Coach of the Year. This is the 6th time McKenzie has won the award. He also won in 01-02, 05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and 13-14.
Earning this award in his 20th season at the helm of the Capers program, McKenzie led his squad to a first-place 18-2 regular season record. The CAPERS will receive a first-round bye into the semi-finals.
McKenzie's CAPERS finished the season with the second-best winning percentage in all of U Sports with a 24-4 record, ranking only behind Laval. The CAPERS had the best offence in the AUS scoring 78.8 points per game and the 3rd ranked defense allowing 68.5 points per game.
McKenzie has led the CAPERS to 6 AUS titles (03-04, 05-06, 08-09, 09-10, 10-11 and 16-17) in his time as head coach.
McKenzie said "It's a great honour to be recognized by your peers. An award like this doesn't happen without the players' effort and the support of our staff on and off the court."
The CAPERS will play their semi-final game on Saturday at the ScotiaBank Centre in Halifax at 1pm. They await the winner of the University of New Brunswick and Memorial University Quarter-final on Friday.
When asked about his team's play heading into the AUS tournament McKenzie commented "We have been playing decent basketball the last few weeks but are still trying to make some tweaks heading into the weekend. At this time of year, you need to defend, execute on offense and hope for some lucky breaks to win this highly competitive tournament."
