(St.John's , NL) - The Memorial Sea-Hawks split the weekend series against the Cape Breton Capers, 74-58.
The Hawks came out soaring, right from the tip-off. They were able to shake the rust off from the previous night's loss. MUN went on an 11-0 run to open up a steady early lead. They were able to play their brand of basketball: no open shots, fast-break layups, and plenty of second-chance opportunities.
For the Capers, it was a completely opposite performance compared to the previous game. They struggled hitting shots and converting on offensive opportunities. On top of their scoring struggles, they had issues holding onto the ball – they had 14 turnovers in the first half.
Memorial held a solid lead at the end of the half, 43-23. Hallie Nickerson and Alana short led the Hawks with 13 and 12 points respectively. Monique Calliste led the Capers with 10 points.
After a tough first half, the Capers had a positive third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 19-10 in the frame. It was their best performance from the field in the game, shooting 44%. The Hawks rallied in the fourth and maintained their lead. It was a great game for Hallie Nickerson who had a game-high 32 points for the Hawks. This win puts the Hawks at 10-4 on the season and CAPERS loss leaves them at 4-9 on the year and in the final playoff spot.
The CAPERS will host the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday, January 31st at 6 pm. This game will also feature the retiring of Alison Keough's jersey. Keough is CBU's All-Time leading scorer (1735 points) and also the AUS all-time leading rebounder (1022 rebounds).
