Capers improve to 9-0
January 15, 2013
The Cape Breton University Capers men's basketball team went on a 20-point run in the first half and improved their AUS leading record to 9-0 with a convincing 81-57 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks Monday at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
CBU led the game 48-20 at halftime in a game that was never really in doubt. The Capers got some floor time in for many of their bench players, especially in the second half.
Meshack Lufile was dominant in the paint and paced CBU’s offence with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds. Shaquille Keith followed with 13 points, Kayon Mayers had 12 and eight rebounds and Arild Geugjes chipped in 10.
“We had a really effective first half in a lot of ways,” said Capers coach Matt Skinn. “We had good activity on the defensive end. I think we need to sustain our concentration for 40 minutes, but I thought our young guys who got in in the fourth quarter did a really good job for us.”
For the Sea-Hawks, Vasilije Curcic led the way with 17 points. Caleb Gould added 11.
The Capers and Sea-Hawks teams meet again today at Sullivan Field House. The women’s game is scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by the men’s tilt at noon. The games were originally scheduled to be played on the weekend, but were changed due to the large amount of snow that recently fell in Newfoundland that hampered travel plans.
