Capers roll past Axemen

Ina showdown between two of the top men’s basketball teams in the CIS, the Cape Breton University Capers were the undisputed winners with a pair of weekend victories over the Acadia Axemen.
The No. 4 ranked Capers were on top of their game against the injury-depleted No. 3 ranked Axemen, posting a 93-72 win on Saturday night and rolling to a 92-61 victory Sunday.
The Capers improved their record to 12-0 in conference play, remaining the lone unbeaten team in the CIS.
Sunday, 11 of the 12 Capers in the lineup figured in the scoring as the homeside ran away with a 31-point victory.
Freshman guard Kayon Mayers earned Player of the Game honours, finishing with a game-high 18 points for the Capers who shot 48 per cent from the floor in the game.
Jimmy Dorsey, the reigning AUS Most Valuable Player, chipped in with 13 points and six assists for the winners while Meshack Lufile had 13 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks off the bench.
Sean Stoqua and Kyle Arseneault had 14 points apiece for the Axemen.
Saturday, AJ Geugjes was an absolute beast down low for the Capers, pouring in 24 points and grabbing 18 boards to earn Player of the Game honours for the Capers.
Shaquille Keith also finished with 24 points for the Capers while Dorsey filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Sean McCormick chipped with 10 points and six rebounds in a winning cause.
Jonathan Tull led the Axemen with 16 points.
Shaquille Smith with 13 points and Sean Stoqua and Tyler Scott with 10 apiece were other top scorers for the reigning AUS champs.
The Capers will return to action this weekend when they travel to Halifax for games with the Saint Mary’s Huskies and the Dalhousie Tigers.
