Capers' Dorsey lights up Acadia
February 18, 2013
Whispers that Jimmy Dorsey was running out of gas proved untrue Sunday.
A day after the reigning most valuable player in AUS men’s basketball was held to 10 points, the fifth-year senior guard from Baltimore drained 37 points, 11 rebounds and four assists as the CIS third-ranked Capers beat the fourth-ranked Acadia Axemen 70-60 in Wolfville.
Acadia knocked Cape Breton from the unbeaten ranks on Saturday with a 73-49 win, but the Capers answered Sunday at War Memorial Gymnasium to guarantee first place for the Final 6 starting March 1 in Halifax.
“Today, I just thought we came back and we played really great team basketball,” said Cape Breton coach Matt Skinn. “We rebounded the ball incredibly well.”
The Capers are 17-1. The Axemen are 14-4 and had a seven-game winning steak stopped.
Dorsey, who went 11-for-29 from the floor, including six triples, grabbed the league scoring lead at 20.3 points per game.
Skinn said Dorsey hasn’t been slumping. He said teams have been keying on him.
“He had 37 points today, but I thought he played really well off the ball and worked hard to get himself open and then worked really hard to get his teammates open as well.”
Meshack Lufile added 13 points for the Capers. Kelson Devereaux chipped in with 11 boards and Shacier Locke 10.
Acadia got 16 points and 12 rebounds from forward Owen Klassen, playing his final game before facing assault charges in a Kentville courtroom on Tuesday. He will continue to play for Acadia pending the outcome of the legal process.
Sean Stoqua also had 16 and Anthony Ashe 10.
