CAPERS 2016 FALL CLASSIC
St.Francis Xavier beat the Acadia Axemen 73-66, CAPERS take 4th
Sydney, NS – The final day of the CAPERS 2016 FALL CLASSIC featured four placing games at Centre 200 on Saturday.
Game 1 – Holland College (1-2) and University of Maine Fort Kent (0-3) played in the 11am game for 7th place. It was an evenly played game from start to finish. Heading into the 4th quarter it was a 4-point lead for the Hurricanes over the Bengals. The Hurricanes used some strong shooting down the stretch to grab the victory from the American school. At the buzzer the score was Holland 105 UMFK 102. Holland was led by Roosevelt Whyley (Nassau, Bahamas) with 30. The Bengals were led in scoring by Rosevelt Smith Jr. (Fairfield, CA) with 27 points.
Game 2 – University of Prince Edward Island (2-1) and Thetford Prep (1-2) played in the 1pm game for 5th place. The Panthers got out the gate quick in the first half and took 16-point lead into the locker room. The Panthers continued to shoot at a high rate in the 3rd quarter to stretch their lead to 21 heading into the 4th quarter. The Quebec school and Panthers traded baskets for much of the final quarter with the UPEI taking the final 97-76. In a losing effort, Quincy Guerrier (Montreal, QC) played inspired basketball, putting up 29. The Panthers spread the scoring around and had 5 players go for double digits, led by Samy Mohamed (Toronto, ON) with 19 and Dut Dut (Ottawa, ON) with 17.
Game 3 – The 5pm third-place game featured the home town Cape Breton University CAPERS (1-2) and the Saint Mary's Huskies (2-1). The CAPERS came out flying in the first quarter and running out to a 28-15 lead. The second quarter was back and forth and helped Cape Breton enter the dressing room at half with a 51-36 lead. The second half was a different story as the Saint Mary's Huskies battled back all the way. The CAPERS ran into foul trouble as the game progressed and Saint Mary's took full advantage. The Huskies pulled away down the stretch and won by a final score of 96-87. The Huskies were led in scoring by Marquis Clayton (Halifax, NS) with 24 points. The CAPERS were led by 6th-man on the night Seth Amoah (Montreal, QC) with 20. SMU's Kemar Alleyne (Scarborough, ON) and CAPERS Seth Amoah were named as tournament all-stars.
Game 4 – The Championship game got underway at 7pm and AUS rivals Acadia University (2-1) battled St. Francis Xavier University (3-0) for the title. The first-half was a low scoring physical affair and the X-men got out in-front of the Axemen 38-31. The 3rd quarter was more of the same as there were no easy buckets for either side. At the end of the 3rd, the Axemen and X-men were all knotted at 53. The game came down to the final minutes and clutch free throws by the X-men as they held on for a 73-66 to take the championship. The Axemen were led in scoring by Trevon Grant with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The X-men were led by Kevin Bercy (Kanata, ON) with 20 and Akil Charles (Glendale, MD) with 15. Bercy and Charles along with Axemen Erik Nissen (Quispamsis, NB) were named to the tournament all-star team.
