Dorsey, Lufile lead talented Caper men's basketball all-decade team
It was a roller-coaster ride, of sorts, for the Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers men's basketball program over the past decade.
At the start of that timeframe, there were two Atlantic University Sport (AUS) crowns (2010, 2013), which included a stellar 19-1 regular season in 2013, along with a two-year stretch that garnered only two victories, followed by a return to the playoffs as the decade wound down.
In a recent Zoom conversation – as part of the Caper Athletics All-Decade Team Series – head coach Matt Skinn, assistant coach Ron Shaw and former CBU forward Meshack Lufile – who was named to the first team – unveiled the program's squad. Listen here!!
"We put together a group, including the current coaching staff, former coaches – as well as the administration – to put together 10 players we felt fit with the all-decade team," Skinn explained.
"Obviously, it was not an easy task – there was a lot of back and forth about who should be joining, and who shouldn't be joining; what some of the criteria were – as far as players being able to be on the team. But we felt that we did our best to, kind of, encapsulate what the decade meant to Caper men's basketball."
Shaw echoed Skinn's sentiment about the challenge with finalizing the roster.
"We had some spirited discussions," he said with a laugh.
Shaw noted the players chosen were "not only great players, but also great, great people."
Noting that he was "rocking" his CBU Alumni sweatshirt, Lufile described his selection as "special."
"I am a proud Caper," the Burlington, Ontario native said.
When it comes to that 'proud Caper,' Skinn said "there were times he [Lufile] didn't know how good he was."
"The biggest thing I respect about Meshack – and I think this is why we are so close … the reason he became what he is, no matter if he hated me [at the time, for being hard on him], or if he hated what was going on, he stuck to it," Skinn added.
He said Lufile's ability to handle criticism – and turn it into something positive – has "made him the man that he is today – a proud CBU alumnus."
"One of my all-time favourite players," Skinn added.
Another standout joining Lufile on the first-team is Jimmy Dorsey.
Skinn called the opportunity to coach the Baltimore, Maryland native – who collected a conference MVP trophy and championship in their lone season together – as a "privilege."
Shaw added the electrifying Dorsey was "an absolute pleasure to coach."
"Jimmy was a real student of the game – a great teammate, and a big moment guy," he said.
