CBU drops important contest 89-74
St. John’s, NL - The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the Cape Brenton Capers in the first out of a 2-game weekend series with a score of 89-74.
St. John's, NL - The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the Cape Brenton Capers in the first out of a 2-game weekend series with a score of 89-74.
The Capers came out strong in the first quarter with a 12-0 run, highlighted by a dunk and an and one play from Chris Ruta. River Drefers ended the Capers's run with a 3 pointer, and the Sea-Hawks were able to come back to within 5 at the end of the first, with the Capers still leading 21-16.
The second quarter opened with an exchange of baskets between the teams, with 3 layups from Memorial's Jodick Moudiandambu and 2 layups from Emmanuel Ring helping the Sea-Hawks side. Late in the quarter the Sea-Hawks were able to pull within 1 point of the lead, but free throws by Chris Rato, Tyson Cato and Ozzy Omar as well as a layup by Jahnian Simmonds allowed them to pull ahead and finish the quarter 41-35.
The Sea-Hawks were led in the first half by Emmanuel Ring with 11 points and Boris Ristanovic with 9, while the Capers' Chris Ruta led the team also with 11 points and Pual Watson also with 9.
The Sea-Hawks came out strong in the third quarter, and a layup followed by an electric dunk from Boris Ristanovic tied the game for Memorial at 41. Back-to-back threes from Flynn Boardman-Raffet gave the Sea-Hawks a 6-point lead midway through the quarter. The Capers's defense struggled with Memorial's solid offensive attack and the Sea-Hawks were able to take a 63-52 lead at the end of the third.
Capers starter Osman Omar made a couple of threes and a layup to start the fourth, but Flynn Board-man Raffet had a reply for the Sea-Hawks with 2 layups and a 3-pointer of his own. The rest of the quarter continued to be dominated by the Sea-hawks, marked by a huge block as well as a one-handed dunk from Emmanuel Ring, and they went on to take the game 89-74.
The Subway Player of the Game for the Sea-Hawks was Flynn-Boardman Raffet, with 19 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Emmanuel Ring had a game-high 27 points with 9 assists while Boris Ristanovic put up 19 points and 7 rebounds.
Osman Omar led the Capers with 18 points and 6 assists, while Chris Ruta (13 points) and Paul Watson (12 points) also scored in double digits.
