CAPERS Men earn weekend split
St. John’s, NL - The Cape Brenton Capers won the second match of the weekend series against the Memorial Sea-Hawks with a score of 92-81.
St. John's, NL - The Cape Brenton Capers won the second match of the weekend series against the Memorial Sea-Hawks with a score of 92-81.
The game opened with a 3-pointer from Memorial's Nicholas Tuff, and was immediately followed by a three from Capers player Justus Peuser. An and-one play and a layup by Emmanuel Ring helped the Sea-Hawks take an early 16-5 lead. However, the Capers were able to come back, and a 3-point shot by Mitchell Mersereau helped them take the lead late in the quarter, and the first quarter ended with Cape Brenton leading 25-18.
The second quarter opened with a big 4-point-play from Memorial's Flynn Boardman-Raffet, but the Capers quickly came back with a 3-point play from Jahnian Simmonds to go on a 9-0 run. Miles Fryett for the Sea-Hawks was able to end that run with a 3-point and-one play. The rest of the quarter consisted of good attacking plays from each side, and the Sea-Hawks were able to come within 6 points of the lead, helped by 8 points from Caleb d'Entremont, to end the second with a score of 47-41.
The Capers were led in the first half by Osman Omar with 13 points and Justus Peuser with 12, while Emmanuel Ring led the Sea-Hawks with 9 points and 2 assists.
The Sea-Hawks made a push early in the third, and 2 three-pointers from Nicholas Tuff along with a dunk from Boris Ristanovic gave them a 3 point lead. However, the Capers were able to quickly counter and regain the lead with a dunk from Chris Ruta. Tight play continued for the remainder of the quarter, and the Sea-Hawks were able to squeak ahead at the end to hold a 73-70 lead heading into the fourth.
The Sea-Hawks kept the lead until midway in the fourth quarter, when a layup by Chris Ruta and then a dunk put the Capers ahead. Despite a determined effort by the Sea-Hawks, Cape Brenton was able to go on and win the game 92-81.
The Subway Player of the game for the Capers was Osman Omar, with 23 points. Chris Ruta had 28, and Tyson Cato and Justus Peuser both had 12.
Nicholas Tuff led the Sea-Hawks with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Boris Ristanovic had a solid performance with 15 points and 9 rebounds, and both River Drefers and Flynn Boardman-Raffet contributed 8 points each along with several assists.
The Sea-Hawks will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Nova Scotia to play Acadia in another 8-point weekend series.
