Capers win two to take over top spot in AUS
SYDNEY — It was another successful weekend for the Cape Breton University Capers men’s soccer team as they took over sole possession of first place in the AUS with a pair of victories.
Sunday, the Capers toppled the previously undefeated University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 4-1 in Charlottetown.
Keishen Bean, with his league leading ninth goal of the season, Shayne Hollis, Ian Greedy and Corson Roach scored for the Capers, who pushed their record to 7-0-1 on the season.
“We try to be consistent both offensively and defensively and that is really what has been behind our success,” said CBU head coach Robbie Chiasson, who’s team entered the weekend ranked fourth in the CIS national standings. “And while our defence has been solid, our offence has been making it difficult for the opposition.
“Keishen (Bean), Ian (Greedy), Shayne (Hollis) have been leading the way, but we have many threats to score and it makes for difficult matchups.”
Saturday, Greedy had two markers and Bean and Jason Massie added singles as the Capers dumped the Dalhousie Tigers 4-1 at home.
Dalhousie player Ben Ur scored the team’s only goal.
In women’s action, the CBU Capers women’s team fell into fifth place in AUS standings after splitting a pair of weekend contests.
Sunday, in a rematch of last season’s AUS championship game, which was won by the Capers, CBU fell by a 3-0 scored to the UPEI Panthers.
The loss dropped the Capers to 4-3-0 on the season.
At home Saturday, Jessica Furtado and Karolyne Blain scored early for the Capers as they posted a 2-1 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers.
Dalhousie player Bianca Jakisa scored the team’s single goal.
The Capers will be off next weekend before returning to the road October 15-16 when they travel to New Brunsick for games with the University de Moncton and the University of New Brunswick.
