Capers to host Subway 2011 AUS Men's Soccer Championship
Cape Breton University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce they will host the Subway 2011 AUS Men’s Soccer Championship, November 4-6 at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex. This will mark the first time the event has been staged in Cape Breton and continues the University’s history of hosting first-class championship events.
“We are pleased to be able to host this event at CBU and to showcase the best university soccer teams in Atlantic Canada,” said John Ryan, CBU’s Director of Athletics. “With the success of the AUS men’s and women’s basketball championships in 2010 and the AUS women’s volleyball championship earlier this year, Cape Bretoners have been exposed to some of the highest calibre of athletic competition in the country. We hope fans join us in supporting the hometown CAPERS and take advantage of this opportunity to once again see some of best young student-athletes.”
One of the top programs in the AUS, with two conference titles (2007, 2009) and a runner-up finish in 2010, the Capers men’s soccer team continues to build to the AUS championship.
“This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our team and compete for a championship in front of our hometown fans,” said Robbie Chiasson, Head Coach of the CAPERS men’s soccer team. “We have been enjoying an outstanding season so far and hope to continue our strong play into the championship event. I hope local soccer fans are able to take advantage of this opportunity to see some of the top soccer talent in Canada.”
Leading the CAPERS offence will be veteran strikers Keishen Bean and Ian Greedy.
Bean, an All-Canadian and the leading scorer in the CIS in 2009 and Greedy, the AUS Rookie of the Year and CIS leading scorer in 2010 have continued to provide the scoring which has driven CBU to top spot in the AUS so far this season.
With nine goals from Bean and eight from Greedy, the CAPERS duo has become a nightmare for opposing defenders.
In the midfield, newcomer Jason Massie has paired with two-time All-Canadian Andrew Rigby to anchor the CAPERS.
Ken MacLean and Richie Wilcox have been selected as Honorary Chairs of the Championship. Both have multiple years of experience playing and coaching soccer at many levels and have been instrumental in developing soccer programs for youth in the area.
