February 15, 2013
Cape Breton University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the recent signing of Jason Massie and Andrew Murphy with the Kingston FC of the Canadian Soccer League for the upcoming season.
Both Massie and Murphy were key players on the Capers men’s soccer team which has enjoyed tremendous success over the past two seasons, winning CIS silver and capturing the AUS championship in 2012 and winning the CIS bronze medal in 2011.
“The contributions of both Jason and Andrew to the men’s soccer program at CBU have been significant over the past two seasons,” said John Ryan, CBU Director of Athletics. “From helping achieve the first national medal in a men’s sport for the University, to enjoying an even more successful season in 2012
“Jason and Andrew have been excellent student-athletes during their time with the Capers and we wish them continued success as they take this next step in their soccer careers.”
Massie, who has spent time with the GPS Portland Phoenix and the Cape Cod Crusaders of the PDL and the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL, capped his two-year career with the Capers in style in 2012, being named a CIS First Team All-Canadian as well as an AUS First Team All-Star. The English midfielder was also named a CIS Academic All-Canadian while completing his Masters of Business Administration at CBU’s Shannon School of Business.
Murphy, a three-year starter for the Capers, who played professional with Preston North End before coming to Canada, enjoyed his best season in the AUS during his final go around.
Despite missing some early contests with a broken hand, Murphy was at his best in the postseason, showing the form which helped his establish the single-season shutout record of eight while with the Ottawa Fury of the PDL.
The 6’4” keeper from Liverpool, was named AUS Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player as he backstopped the Capers to the title and then was named CBU Player of the Game twice at the CIS championship, earning the honour both the Capers quarter-final victory and championship game loss.
“Upon hearing that both Andrew and Jason signed on professionally with Kingston I was extremely pleased,” said Robbie Chiasson, Head Coach of the CBU men’s soccer team “Both players graduate this year and I thought they may return to England to pursue professional opportunities. Obviously, they have enjoyed their time in Canada and I am sure they will be major contributors to the Kingston franchise.
“Andrew was outstanding this season in our playoff run and Jason’s energy and experience will allow him to do well in the CSL. Our loss is certainly Kingston’s gain and I wish them both the best of luck.”
