Capers face StFX in key men's soccer contest
The Cape Breton University Capers men's soccer team will host rival StFX in a key AUS men's soccer matchup this Friday in Sydney.
The Capers are unbeaten in their last three games and have allowed only one goal against in that span. That came after opening the season with a pair of road losses.
CBU will now look to post some victories. They've battled to a pair of draws in their current streak, and hope to pick up full points in order to move up the log-jammed AUS standings. The Capers (1-2-2) do have the advantage of having two games in hand on a number of teams above them in the standings.
Veteran midfielder Sandro Rajkovic says his squad has had a few draws that should have been victories, but they just need to finish.
"Last game, I think we had 16 shots and Saint Mary's had eight," said the 23-year-old from Hamilton, Ont. "We've been getting the shots and getting the chances, we just have to put the ball away.
"It's looking good. Even in training (Wednesday), we're practising a bit of finishing and the guys are putting it in the net. Now it's time to put it in during the game as well."
The X-Men (4-2-1) are tied for top spot in the conference standings, so Friday's game will be a test for the Capers' side.
Rajkovic, who's taken on the role as team captain this year, said the players are getting more and more comfortable with each other everytime they're on the field.
"It was a bit challenging, but I feel we have the right attitude from the guys, so it made it easier for me," he said. "I think definitely we've started to put it together and we're undefeated in three games. We're looking to roll from there."
Game times for Friday are 3 p.m. (women) and 5:15 p.m. (men) at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex. The Capers teams continue play on the road on Sunday against the Mount Allison Mounties.
