Sydney, NS - The CBU CAPERS defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 1-0 in the final of the 2017 Subway AUS Championships. The CAPERS scored a first-half goal by captain Stuart Heath (Belfast, IE) assisted by tournament MVP Charlie Waters (Lancashire, UK). Waters made a cross into the box that was headed into the corner by Heath for the only goal of the game.
The CAPERS outshot the Varsity Reds 10-5 during the game and controlled possession for three-quarters of the game. The Reds applied pressure during the final 15 minutes but the CAPERS defense held strong and Ben Jackson (Bury, UK) turned aside all shots faced.
Marcus Lees (Barrie, ON) was named Subway player of the game for UNB, Cory Bent (Preston, UK) was named Subway player of the game for the winners. Charlie Waters was named the tournament MVP. Waters had a hand in all six goals that the CAPERS scored on the weekend.
The CAPERS have now won back-to-back AUS titles for the first time in school history.
The CAPERS record moves to 13-0-1 on the season and they are the U Sports #1 ranked team as they head off to Nationals. Both the CAPERS and UNB Varsity Reds will travel to Kamloops, BC for the U Sport national championships being hosted by Thompson Rivers University, Nov.9th to 12th.
