Sydney, NS – The defending U Sports National Champions continued their undefeated run by beating the UNB Reds in the AUS final. The CAPERS scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 victory and win their third consecutive AUS title.
The CAPERS used the wind to their advantage and played forward for much of the half. The CAPERS were able to put 12 shots toward the UNB net. Many shots sailed wide because of the strong winds and Evan Barker (Winnipeg, MB) pushed aside an attempt midway through the half. 1st-Team All-star Cory Bent (Preston, UK) scored an incredible four-touch goal in the 37thminute. Bent was able to corral a pass from Joel Eckert-Ayensa (Pulhaim, DE) and chip the ball over Barker. UNB Reds Rookie of the Year Tristan Nkoghe (Sherbrooke, QC) received a red card in the 43rdminute from the bench. CAPERS keeper Ben Jackson (Bury, UK) didn't have to face any shots on goal and half ended with the defending National Champs leading 1-0.
The wind was with UNB's attack in the second half but the CAPERS were able to keep possession and defend well. The Reds were only able to get 3 shots on goal in second half. Cory Bent earned a penalty 78' and Joel Eckert-Ayensa stepped up and delivered from the spot. The CAPERS were able to defend the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
Barker made some great saves to keep the game at 2-0, stopping 4 of 6 shots. Jackson earned the clean sheet by making 3 saves.
Both teams will now travel to Vancouver for the U Sports National Championships being hosted by the University of British Colombia November 8thto 11th.
