"Like the city," Kairo Coore informs.
That's how he explains the correct pronunciation of his first name – one that, as he notes, is the same as the Egyptian capital city.
Fans of Cape Breton University (CBU) men's soccer won't take long learning that lesson about their beloved program's newest recruit – a dynamic striker from Whitby, Ontario.
"I am so excited to have this incredible opportunity," the 20-year-old says of joining the Capers.
The product of the Erin Mills Soccer Club in Mississauga is coming off a couple of seasons in Division 2 competition with the NCAA's Saginaw Valley State Cardinal of Michigan.
"Deano [Morley] did a great job recruiting me," he says of the Caper head coach when asked about his decision to don CBU orange.
He notes he has heard great things about the program from Caper alumni, including those playing professionally in the Canadian Premier League (CPL).
"It was time to come home," Coore informs of his return to Canada, particularly considering his aspiration to play in the nation's highest circuit.
He says the appeal of the CBU program includes its perennial appearances in the CIS championship tournament.
"We are very excited – for many reasons," Morley says of his prize recruit.
Noting his values are "incredibly clear," he adds, Coore's is focused squarely on "family, education and then football."
"That's what we are looking for in our program," Morley notes.
He says he has "enjoyed building a relationship" with Coore.
"Kairo is someone special," Morley says.
Describing himself as a "hold-up striker," Coore says he "loves to get in behind [the defenders]."
"I think I am a strong finisher as well," he adds.
Morley agrees, adding that Coore is "incredibly talented" with both feet.
"He has a tremendous ability to beat his man," the CBU mentor says, while also praising him for his "great pace."
When it comes to soccer, Coore says he started at a "young age."
"I really got into the game," he adds of his growing love for the sport.
He gives much credit to his grandfather – a native of Barbados – who ran a soccer club when he came to Canada, for helping develop his passion.
After starting to take the pitch competitively as an eight-year-old, Coore was playing at some of the highest levels by the time he reached high school.
"I knew I had what it takes," he notes of having an opportunity in Europe, which was only upended because he did not have "access to a passport."
Getting back to joining the Capers, he reiterates his excitement about playing for Morley, noting he has heard he is a "great player-manager."
"He helps you become the best that you can be," Coore continues, in describing the Caper program's reputation for preparing players for the pro ranks.
Morley says that he has "all of the ingredients" to succeed – not only at the U Sports' level but also professionally in the CPL.
"Kairo is going to make a strong and immediate impact," he offers of what he thinks Coore will accomplish in the AUS, predicting he will be "one of the top strikers in the nation."
As for eventually making the move to the pros, Coore notes the need to adjust to the "speed of play."
"I am going to have to continue to do that in order to keep moving up," he says.
But – first thing's first – helping the Capers continue their run at the top of the conference while making an impact on the national championship stage.
Noting it will be his first time on the east coast, Coore says he is looking forward to having a "whole new experience" – athletically, academically, and otherwise.
"I am really excited," Coore adds.
Speaking of academics, he will study for a Bachelor of Arts, while minoring in marketing.
After completing his education, Coore will pursue his professional soccer options.
As for other career plans, he hopes to work in real estate investment.
"I would love to get into that field," he says.
Coore and his new Caper teammates will kick-off training camp on Aug. 21.
"Everyone in U Sports and the CPL should be very excited by this signing," Morley says.
