Sydney, N.S. – The Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers (5-1-3) exploded offensively to earn a decisive 10-0 victory over the winless Mount Allison Mounties (0-10-0) in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex.
"It's a big win for us, for sure," CBU first-year midfielder Carson Larabie (Ajax, ON) said, describing it as an effort – and result – that they have been "hoping for all year."
He noted that they have been working on a new formation installed by CBU head coach Deano Morley, one that they "played to a tee" in the victory.
In a first half where the home side scored early – and often – Jose de Cunha (Cascais, Portugal) headed home a Charlie Waters (Blackpool, UK) corner kick in the fifth minute to open the scoring.
With CBU exerting constant pressure, defender Jamie Watson (Kirkcaldy, UK) doubled the edge – in the 15th minute – off another quality corner kick from Waters.
Off a nifty setup from Larabie, Kairo Coore (Whitby, ON) made no mistake in putting a shot behind beleaguered Mount Allison goalkeeper Rhys Chambers (Halifax, N.S.) to make it 3-0.
After Chambers made a left-handed save on Coore – in the 33rd minute – the freshman collected the rebound and deposited it into an empty cage.
Waters – with another stellar cross – assisted on the 5-0 marker from Daniel Williams (Pierrefonds, QC).
Late in the opening stanza, Coore and Waters got in alone, with the Caper veteran (Waters) the finisher to make it 6-0.
The Capers continued to flex their offensive muscles in the second half, with Cian Lynch (Dublin, Ireland) scoring twice, while Owen Sheppard (St. John's, NL) and Peter Sancho (Dartmouth, N.S.) added singles.
Jordan Watkins (Georgetown, ON) made three saves for the shutout.
Waters – the Subway player of the match – finished with one goal and five assists.
Larabie says the Capers hope that the victory will "show people" that they will be a force to be reckoned with the AUS regular season winding down and the playoffs on the horizon.
The Capers will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 24, when they host the Dalhousie Tigers, while the Mounties will visit the STFX X-Men in Antigonish.
Kickoff for both matchups is 3:15 p.m.
