(St.John's) - The Memorial Sea-Hawks (1-1-1) dropped their home opener by a score of 2-0 to the Cape Breton Capers (2-0-1) on a blustery Saturday afternoon at King George V Park in St. Johns.
The Capers got out of the gate fast, controlling possession early and converting on their first chance in the box, as midfielder Jacob Spizzirri was able to find a loose ball and quickly fire it into the back of the net in the 8th minute. Shortly after, the Capers were able to add another tally, scoring in the 22ndminute off a nice strike by Owen Sheppard off an assist by Ze Cunha. With the Sea-Hawks in an early 2-0 hole, they really started to push the pace at the end of the first half and into the second. The score would remain at 2-0 as the whistle was blown for halftime, the Capers had a decisive 12-4 lead in shots at this point.
A real sense of urgency came about the Sea-Hawks with their play in the final 45, pushing more for offense with progressive passing and a real purpose. However, despite their best efforts, the Capers defending, and strong possession game allowed them to stifle any chances the Sea-Hawks had developing. There wasn't much action as the game winded down, the Capers did their best to limit any chances on goal and they did admirably. The Sea-Hawks outshot the Capers 4-3 in the second half as they tried to climb back. Attackers Jacob Grant and Rodi Kichimov were able to create some opportunities in the Capers half but they had trouble developing those into anything more.
The Sea-Hawks and Capers are back in action tomorrow at 3:15 NST for the final game of this home opening weekend.
